Nestled in the north-west corner of Ireland, Donegal is a place apart, famed for its stunning landscape, resilient people and rich distilling heritage. Sliabh Liag Distillers (pronounced “sleeve leeg”) produce premium spirits and aim to reclaim that rich distilling heritage. Their award-winning brands are heavily inspired by the beauty, folklore, and history of south-west Donegal.

In October of 2021, Sliabh Liag Distillers completed the first distillation of spirit at its new Ardara Distillery. Ex-bourbon oak casks are being filled with a smoky, heavily-peated, triple distilled single malt, with operations commencing just 51 weeks after the foundation stone was set for the distillery in the festival town of Ardara, on Donegal’s Wild Atlantic Way. Founders and owners of Sliabh Liag Distillers, James and Moira Doherty are dedicated to honouring the deep traditions of whiskey making in Donegal and so, are distilling rich, smoky Single Malt and Pot Still style whiskeys in an authentic Ulster style. The Ardara Distillery Visitor Centre opened in the summer of 2022 offering tiered options for individuals and groups.

MORE INFORMATION

As casks are being filled, whiskey enthusiasts can become a “Seanchaí Cask Owner” (Seanchaí is the Irish for storyteller) and join Sliabh Liag Distillers on their journey to reclaim Donegal’s distilling heritage. Just 600 casks are available, and the company has taken the rare step of offering to buy back the cask if, after five years, you decide you no longer want the cask and its contents. And they’ll do this with a 3% CAGR interest. For more information on Seanhaí Cask ownership visit our website.
